Beckton was once famous for two things: its gasworks, the largest in Europe; and its sewage treatment works - still going strong as the biggest in Britain. Happily, this once marshy and unappealing district in east London has been dramatically transformed. With millions of pounds' worth of investment from the London Docklands Development Corporation, Beckton is now held up as a textbook example of successful regeneration. Situated in the borough of Newham, which is hosting the 2012 Olympics, Beckton is primarily a residential area with a variety of supermarkets and retail parks.
