Barrasford is a village in Northumberland, nine miles north of Hexham, on the river North Tyne. Barrasford is noted for its quarry. It lies on a valuable seem of rock known as the Great Whinsill. This impressive outcrop of rock provides the foundation for much of Hadrians Wall, located several miles away. Hadrian's Wall, one of the most significant Roman monuments in Britain, was constructed in 122 AD and spans some 117 kilometres across the width of the country. Barrasford lies in the shadow of Haughton Castle which dates back to circa 14th century, when it was fortified.
