With its strategic position on the River Dearne, and the route between Sheffield and Bradford, there had almost certainly been a settlement in Barnsley for a long time prior to its mention in the Domesday Book in 1086, when it had some 200 inhabitants. There it is referred to as Berneslai, a name possibly derived from the Saxon words for barn and field, berne and lay respectively. Although these days the town has a population of more than 72,000, and the borough of more than 220,000, it is still surprisingly a rural area, including districts like Penistone.
