Although Barbon is in Cumbria, scenically it has a lot more in common with the nearby Yorkshire Dales; indeed it sits in Barbondale, a pretty part of the Lune valley. Barbon, three miles North of Kirkby Lonsdale, is a village of white-painted cottages and solid stone walls, with a church that looks more ancient than it is: St Bartholomew’s was built in the perp style by Lancaster architects Paley and Austin in 1893, but it does incorporate some carvings from the chapel that preceded it. One of the white-painted buildings certainly worth a visit is the 17th-century Barbon Inn, formerly a coaching inn.
