‘Ride a Cock Horse to Banbury Cross’ is what most people remember Banbury for. The English nursery rhyme is probably based on a lady from the Fiennes family whose ancestral home, Broughton Castle, is three miles out of Banbury. She can be seen in all her splendour on the North Bar, just near the famous Banbury Cross. At one time Banbury had many crosses but they were destroyed by the Puritans in 1600s. Banbury remained without a cross until 1859 when the current cross, set in the middle of a roundabout, joining the North Bar and South Bar, was erected to commemorate the marriage of Queen Victoria’s eldest daughter.
