The Antrim town of Ballyclare has seen its share of invaders and incomers throughout the centuries, from Viking raiders through Norman conquerors (who left their mark in the form of mottes still to be seen thereabouts) to the Scots who arrived during the Plantation. These days those searching out the settlement are likely to be tourists, including travellers who arrive at nearby Larne on ferries from England and Scotland, and some who come from further afield tracing ancestors who emigrated from the town to America and Australia – the families of Mark Twain and Sam Houston among them so it’s said.
