Axbridge is situated close to the A38 on the banks of the River Axe, on the southern edge of the Mendip Hills. It is a parish, a market town and a municipal borough located in the Hundred of Winterstoke, 13 miles South West of Bristol. From the ridge above the town there are fine views of South Wales across the Bristol Channel and, in the other direction, beautiful countryside stretching to the Quantocks and Bridgewater Bay. The origins of settlement in the area almost certainly go back as far as Stone Age man, whose tools have been found in the nearby hills.
