On the western edge of the Yorkshire Dales National Park, Austwick is a pretty little village of fewer than 500 inhabitants. The settlement is easy to get to, just off the A65, so within a scenic drive of the M6 near Lancaster or the M65 from Nelson. The place is surrounded by lovely countryside of interest to diverse groups: amateur geologists and lovers of the unusual will find the so-called erratic boulders on the hills fascinating - dropped by the last ice age, and left on limestone 'stalks'; and there is limestone pavement nearby, beloved of geography teachers everywhere.
