Ashington is situated in the county of Northumberland in north-east England. There is currently debate as to whether it should be described as a town or village but if the latter were the case it would be the largest village in England. During the 1840â€™s, when the Duke of Portland built houses to encourage workers escaping from the potato famine to come and work at the local collieries he was founding, Ashington grew from a small hamlet into a successful small mining town and during the peak coal mining period it was considered by many to be the â€œworldâ€™s largest coal-mining villageâ€.
