Set in the Peak District of England, the Derbyshire village of Ashford-in-the-Water gets its name from its proximity to the river Wye. Local industries included lead mining, candle making and in 1748, Henry Watson discovered Ashford Marble, a limestone that when polished, made the black marble perfect as a background to mosaic and inlaid patterns. Although it has died out today, Ashford church houses one of the finest examples of an inlaid tabletop. In tribute to the candle makers of the past, the Candle House stands proud on the site of the old candle making factory in Greaves Lanes – greaves are how the workers referred to the dregs of melted tallow.
