At the mouth of the Coquet river in mid-Northumberland, on the North Sea coast, lies the town of Amble, nine miles south of Alnwick and a mile southeast of Warkworth. The town was built upon a peninsula, providing extensive views of the surrounding coastline. The name is thought to have derived from Annebelle, an Old English term meaning â€˜Annaâ€™s Promontory.â€™ Roman coins and ancient Briton foundations have been found in the area surrounding Amble, suggesting occupation at different times during its history.
