Legend says that Alfreton took its name from Alfred the Great who is said to have occupied a house in King Street. Whilst in the town look out for the sign-post bearing the words "Alfreton 0 Miles, Nottingham 17 Miles". There is an attractive park in the town which includes a bridle way for horse-riding. One of the town's most famous sons was Robert Watchorn who became Commmissioner of Immigration at Ellis Island, New York in 1905.
The town has a bustling indoor market which is open Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday.
