Alford is a small town and the commercial centre for the Howe of Alford in Aberdeenshire, Scotland, situated in fertile farmland south of the Coreen Hills, in a rich agricultural area near the River Don, 23 miles from Aberdeen. Alford is famous as the home of Aberdeen Angus cattle; an iron life-sized bull statue stands at the edge of the town. The town is also well-know for Oatmeal and the Battle of Alford in 1645 when the Covenanters were defeated by the Marquis of Montrose. Alford is an ancient settlement with many archaeological sites, two miles to the north at Old Keig is a stone circle, and with the stonesâ€™ weight estimated at 53 tons, it is though to be the largest known.
