Acton is an Anglo-Saxon name meaning Oak Town, and for centuries, this was a village surrounded by forests and fields. By the 1700s, it had become a favourite country retreat for rich and titled people, many hoping to boost their health by drinking the mineral water from Acton Wells. In the late 19th Century, Acton was awash with small laundries, and so the one-time Oak Town was dubbed Soapsuds Island. In the 1900s, Acton blew away the bubbles, got into industry in a big way, and grew into a cheerful west London suburb.
