Achnasheen is a tiny village in Wester-Ross, in the centre of the Northern Highlands of Scotland, situated 42 miles north-west of Inverness. Achnasheen lies at a junction between Skye and Gairloch. The village was historically an important drover stop for the cattle-trade in the Highlands on their way to the markets at Dingwall and Inverness. The â€˜Old Drovers Roadâ€™ can be seen on the north-side of Loch Rosque at 100ft above the main road. Achnasheen translated from Gaelic means â€˜field of stormsâ€™ this is probably an accurate description of the area during winter weather, as it sits at a height of 500ft at the foot of Ben Fionn, with little shelter in the wide valley of Strathbran.
