Aboyne is an ancient village in the heart of Royal Deeside, Aberdeenshire, Scotland, 30 miles west of Aberdeen, near to the Cairngorms National Park. The village was formerly known as Bonty and had a castle recorded as being garrisoned by King Edward’s English troops in 1291. Prehistoric remains include a Pictish cross-slab formation stone standing in the grounds of Aboyne Castle, Tomnaverie stone-circle and Balnagowan Necropolis; with its Blue Cairn dating from c.3rd century BC, with boulders measuring 53m long Aboyne is largely a Victorian creation dating from 1676, when it received a burgh charter.
