One of the three National Parks in Wales, the Brecon Beacons consists of around 500 square miles of rugged, beautiful countryside including Pen y Fan, the highest mountain in South Wales. From Abergavenny in the East to Llandeilo in the West, Brecon in the North and Merthyr Tydfil in the South this National Park includes the Brecon Beacons (obviously) and the Great Forest in the centre, the ominous sounding Black Mountains in the East and the Black Mountain (different range) in the West (yes, that is confusing!). Plenty of waterfalls and caves and many many activity centres if you're looking for an active break!
