Wooler is an ancient market town and parish in Glendale, six miles east from the foot of the Cheviot Hills and sixteen miles from Berwick. The only market town in Glendale, Wooler was given to Robert de Musco Campo by Henry I in the twelfth century. When the family line expired, the land changed hands many times before coming to the Grey family who in turn passed it to the Earls of Tankerville, who are still the principal landowners to this day. In 1402 a famous battle was fought at Homildon Hill, between the Scots, led by the Earl of Douglas, and the English, led by Sir Henry ‘Hotspur’ Percy.
