The village of Winscombe lies the western edge of the Mendip Hills. Archeological finds, including a Palaeolithic hand axe (c.200,000 B.C.), suggest that man has inhabited this area for a very long time. An iron age fort dominates the nearby hill at Banwell and plenty of evidence of Roman occupation confirm that the area retained strategic and economic importance for many ages. A branch line of the Great Western Railway was opened in 1869. Known as the Strawberry Line, it was used by strawberry growers in the Cheddar area to transport their produce to market.
