Wem is located in North Shropshire and local archaeological finds indicate that this area was originally an Iron Age settlement, with the coming of the Saxons the town acquired the name of “Wamm†meaning marsh and is a direct reference to the marshy ground found around the River Roden which flows through the centre of the town and which, through time, has been modified to Wem. Mentioned in the Domesday Book as consisting of four manors and farms, at that time, it seems that the area was heavily wooded and local wildlife included roebuck and hawks which were in abundance in the area and today Wem is still surrounded by the Shropshire countryside, less wooded but still very much a rural setting.
