The Ryedale village of Weaverthorpe, at the south eastern corner of North Yorkshire, has a history going back to Saxon times and probably beyond, given that Bronze Age relics have been found nearby. Probably named for a Wolfrith, denoting this was originally a Norse settlement, there is thought to have been an early Saxon church built in the village. The current church, St Andrew’s, is a rather curious structure, part Saxon, and part Norman, with a strange tower from which the interior staircase bulges as if it was something of an afterthought.
