The important Wiltshire market town of Warminster dates from Saxon times but the surrounding downs were occupied during the Iron Age, as evidenced by the remaining earthworks. These include the nearby Battlesbury Camp which is one of around 50 Iron Age hill forts in Wiltshire and considered the best preserved and most significant in the county. In the Middle Ages the town became rich on the wool and cloth trade but also owed much of its prosperity to the busy corn market, which was once second only to Bristol in the South West.
