Wark on Tyne is a small village and civil parish usually called Wark in Northumberland, 12 miles north of Hexham and 5 miles south east of Bellingham. It is not to be confused with Wark on Tweed in the same county, within the borough of Berwick-upon-Tweed. It lies on the west bank of the River North Tyne. The name is derived from the Viking word for ‘earthworks’, and refers to the mound at the south of the village, where a meeting hall once stood. In the Middle Ages Wark was the head of the Lordship of Tynedale, and where Scottish Kings held court as it was part of Scotland.
