The market town of Ulverston sits in the north west corner of the Furness peninsula, the hills behind it, Chapel Island, the Cartmel peninsula and Morecambe Bay before it. Ulverston was granted a market charter by Edward I in 1280, and to this day holds Thursday and Saturday markets, and is the site of livestock markets too. There are some older buildings in the town, including St Mary’s Church, parts of which date from 1540, but the dominant architectural style in the centre is Georgian, with solid structures of understated elegance, many of them a practical three-storeys to make good use of the space available.
