An historic village located on the north bank of the Tyne estuary, in north east England, Tynemouth next to North Shields, opposite South Shields on the south bank, just six miles from Newcastle upon Tyne. Before the two piers were constructed in 1854-95 at the river mouth, the notorious Black Midden Reef claimed many victims leading to the formation of the first Volunteer Life Brigade in the country. The Priory and Castle that stand upon the headland, overlooking the river, easily defended the Iron Age settlement with its views across both of the ‘shields’, the river mouth and surrounding sea.
