Tweedmouth is a village parish of the port and town of Berwick-upon-Tweed, lying on the southern bank at the mouth of the river Tweed, in Northumberland. It is connect to Berwick by an elegant bridge. In 1203 King John attempted to fortify Tweedmouth but was twice interrupted by the Scots. Berwick is England’s most northerly town, lying 3 miles south east of the Scottish border and had become Scotland’s leading seaport by the 13th century. Whilst the south bank of the Tweed has always been in England, Berwick was held alternatively by England and Scotland for centuries, changing hands around thirteen times before finally being surrendered to the English in 1482.
