Evidence of human activity dates back to at least 3,500 years ago in Trowbridge. It is thought that the Saxons were responsible for naming the town, after a tree bridge near the early settlement. Trowbridge flourished and was already occupied during Roman times and there's evidence of a substantial timber manor house standing there in the Saxon era. At the time of the Domesday Book it is believed that around 200 people were living in what was then called Straburg. It was the trade in cloth that took Trowbridge from village to town and by the 1500s it was a very desirable manor, full of wealth.
