Trafalgar Square houses some of the capital's best-loved attractions. It has also traditionally functioned as a gathering place for celebrations, festivals, special events, vigils and protests. Although the famous pigeons have all but deserted the square since it became an offence to feed them, there is still plenty to see. The Grade I-listed Nelson's Column - a column and statue commemorating Admiral Nelson's victory in the 1805 Battle of Trafalgar - rises proudly after a recent refurbishment, surrounded by fountains and guarded, as ever, by four enormous bronze lions.
