Tower Hill is an elevated area that separates the Tower of London from the eastern perimeter of the City of London. In past times, many of the Tower's high-profile prisoners were publicly executed on Tower Hill. Among them was Thomas More, the author, statesman and Lord Chancellor who was beheaded for treason in 1535 after a series of disagreements with Henry VIII. Trinity Square, the site of the first permanent scaffold, is a much less grisly place today. Its gardens contain the Tower Hill Memorial, remembering the thousands of seamen who died during the two world wars.
