The historic market town of Tonbridge, which pre-dates Norman times, lies on the Wealdway Walk and the Medway Valley Walk on the River Medway where it splits into two channels. This provides the town with numerous riverside walks and two major river bridges, with locks and country walks easily accessible. The Weald of Kent can be explored easily from here. Recorded in the Doomsday Book in 1087 as Tonebridge, the name is thought to have indicated a bridge belonging to Tunna, a common Anglo-Saxon name or alternatively, a bridge belonging to an estate or manor from an Old English term ‘tun’.
