The village of Titchfield lies at the southern end of the lovely Meon Valley and mid-way between Portsmouth and Southampton. The valley and river get their name from the tribe of Jutes - the Meonwara - who settled in the area in the 5th/6th century. The church of St.Peter was founded in 680 and parts of this early building can still be found in the tower and west end of the nave. The majority of the church dates from the C12th & C13th and also the rebuilding of 1867. In 1232 the "White Canons" of the order Premontre founded Titchfield Abbey which came to dominate the village and surrounding area for the next 300 years.
