The small town of Thrapston is the headquarters of the East Northamptonshire district. The population of the town is rising steadily and was estimated to be approaching 6,000 in 2006, over 1,000 more than in 2001. In 1205 the town was granted a Market Charter, in return for two palfreys (a type, as opposed to breed, of horse that was highly prized in the Middle Ages). Every year the high street is closed and the people of the town get together to commemorate this event with the town's charter fair.
