Thornaby-on-Tees is situated between Stockton On Tees and Middlesbrough, close to Ingleby Barwick, Acklam, Billingham and Norton in the north-east of England, in Teesside, the area formerly known as Cleveland, in the borough of Stockton-on-Tees. The meaning of the name stems from the village of Thornaby being originally settled by a Viking called Thormad or Thormoth, of Danish origin. The name was spelled in various ways over the centuries including Turmozbi, Thormozbi and Tormozbia in the eleventh century.
