This village in the Chew Valley on the northern edges of the Mendip Hills is thought to have derived its name from the Knights of the Templar. The word cloud is possibly derived from the personal name, Cloda. The village straddles the busy A37 which connects the cathedral city of Wells with Bristol. It is five miles from the town of Midsomer Norton and within easy reach of Bath, which lies to Temple Cloud's east along the A39. The village was once surrounded by the pits of the Somerset coal field, now long since abandoned.
