Tain is an ancient Royal Burgh in the Highlands of Scotland situated on the south-side of the Dornoch Firth. Tain’s original charter was granted in 1066 by Malcolm Canmore, making Tain Scotland’s oldest Burgh. Tain is a town of great antiquity and character with interesting architecture. The oldest buildings are the three churches dedicated to St. Duthac, with St. Duthus Church built c1370. The old Tolbooth dates 1706-33 with the baronial-style court-house attached dating 1848. The Town Hall, Royal Hotel, Parish Church and Museum were all built by the Maitland family in the 19th century.
