Swinton is a historic village in the Scottish Borders region, situated 5 miles north of Coldstream, close to Duns, Kelso and Berwick-Upon–Tweed, with the Leet Waters flowing to the north. The original village was named in a land grant to Swein, son of Ufkill dating Swinton back to the reign of King Edgar (1097-1107). The current village was a market village planned and laid out during the 18th century. The Market Cross was erected in 1769, a symbol of the commercial status, and stands on the picturesque village green, which is now also used as a football pitch - the cross is referred to as the ‘12th man.
