Sutton in Ashfield is almost adjacent to Mansfield, lying to the west and south west of the town. The A38 road leads out of Mansfield and cuts through part of Sutton in Ashfield on its way to junction 28 of the M1. The M1 junction is only two miles away from the town and therefore Sutton in Ashfield gives excellent access to all parts of the country. The earliest known settlement of the area was in Saxon times and the town is mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086 as 'Sutone'. The first Cotton Mill was built in Sutton by the Unwin Family c1770.
