Stromness is an ancient town on the west coast of mainland Orkney in Scotland situated at an inlet of Scapa Flow along the Hamnavoe shore. The burgh of Stromness has the major ferry port on Orkney which is frequently visited by ferries from Scrabster on mainland Scotland and passing cruise ships. Once inhabited by Picts and Vikings, Stromness grew in 1670 when the Hudson Bay Company chose the harbour as the last port for their ships heading to Canada. The town is also well-known as the home of author George Mackay Brown (1929-96).
