In years gone by, the Strand was one of London's most glamorous streets, lined with palatial mansions overlooking the Thames. By Victorian times, it had become a lively centre for theatre and nightlife. However, the construction of Victoria Embankment in the 1860s stole the Strand's riverside location, and the development of new roads and buildings in the early 1900s led to the destruction of numerous theatres. Today, the Strand is a busy thoroughfare stretching from Fleet Street to Trafalgar Square, with plenty of sights worth seeing.
