The High Suffolk town of Stowmarket lies roughly halfway between Ipswich and Bury St Edmunds, and it has always enjoyed good communications links. As well as being on the A14 arterial road Stowmarket is on the main London-Norwich railway line, and its main river, the Gipping (there is also the delightfully named river Rat to the south), was canalised with locks at the end of the 18th century, conveniently feeding into the Orwell estuary at Ipswich. Whilst the waterway has declined in transport terms its towpath remains as a pleasant route for walkers from Stowmarket all the way to Ipswich docks.
