Just 3 miles south of Kidderminster, Stourport-on-Severn is the third of the Wyre Forest towns. Stourport is the product of the Canal building era of the18th century and was specifically built to meet the needs of the canal age. Prior to the opening of the Staffordshire & Worcester Canal there had been two small villages, Upper and Lower Mitton, at the confluence of the Seven and the Stour (two 16th century houses are still to be found in Mitton Street). The Staffordshire & Worcester was built by the great canal builder James Brindley and linked the River Seven with the Trent & Mersey Canal, opened in 1771 Stourport soon became one of the busiest, and biggest, interchange ports in the country with all manner of goods being trans-shipped between the canal barges and the larger river craft for onward passage to the sea.
