Stonehaven is a town in Aberdeenshire on the east coast of Scotland, situated between Montrose and Aberdeen, in a sheltered position looking out to the North Sea. Stonehaven was granted burgh of barony in 1607. Stonehaven has a unique Fireball Festival to celebrate the New Year, where participants swing fireballs around on the end of chains before eventually throwing them into the harbour. Stonehaven grew around an Iron Age fishing village, an archaeological site 4 miles north-west, found evidence of ancient settlements with ring cairns dating from 2nd-3rd millennium BC and the best preserved Roman earthwork in Grampian dating 84AD.
