Once no more than a handful of estates and a village on the outskirts of the busy trading port of Bristol, Stoke Bishop is now an affluent suburb that borders on the Rivers Trym and Avon. With its mix of Victorian and modern housing stock, it's also home to the halls of residence for many students attending the University of Bristol. The presence of the large student population explains the frequent bus services from the area into the centre of Bristol and to the university campus itself. Much of the more recent development of the area was achieved not by expanding its geographical footprint but by building on the sports ground known as the Smelting Works due to a previous use, as well as The Grove which once belonged to the Clifton High school.
