Stockton-on-Tees is a large town in north east England which is actually split between County Durham and North Yorkshire. A number of smaller towns such as Thornaby and Yarm are included n the borough, making it larger than Middlesbrough in terms of population and square miles. Originally an Anglo Saxon settlement, Stockton was built on high ground near to the northern bank of the river Tees. The manor was created in 1138 and was purchased by Bishop Pudsey of Durham in 1189, A market charter was granted to the town in 1310 by another bishop of Durham, Bishop Bek.
