Stewarton is a historic town in East Ayrshire in Scotland situated 5 miles north of Kilmarnock on the Annick Water. The rural town is known as ‘The Bonnet Toun’ and was associated with making bonnets and traditional Scottish head-wear during the 16th century, specialising in manufacturing regimental headgear such as ‘The Tam O’ Shanter’, ‘The Balmoral’ and ‘The Glengarry’. A notable resident was the industrialist David Dale (1739-1840) who was born in Stewarton and went on to pioneer the cotton mills at New Lanark.
