St Osyth is a village and civil parish in northeast Essex, about 5 miles west of Clacton-on-Sea on the Tendring Peninsula. The centre of the village is dominated by the medieval remains of the Priory, built in 1118 and standing on 383 acres of land. It was established for the Augustine Canons and became one of the great Augustine Abbeys of Europe. The Priory is currently used as a private home. The ancient tradition of ‘beating the bounds’ is maintained in the village. This involves a procession of parishioners, led by the minister, churchwarden, and choirboys, parading around the boundary of their parish, normally around 5 weeks after Easter.
