To be found in the North West of England St Helens was until recent times a village but its geographic location and communication links have helped the town grow in importance in the last 100 years. St Helens has a natural geology that provided coal, the fuel of the Industrial Revolution, and the local mineral deposits were exploited to the full leading to glass and copper also being produced in the area. The natural resources were there and to ensure its growth St Helens had to be able to transport the goods to the consumers and the Sankey Navigation Canal was conveniently located to accomplish this task.
