Once a thriving little centre of industry, Spark Bridge these days is a quiet village of traditional whitewashed Cumbrian cottages many of which date from the 17th century. It was the village’s location by the River Crake that helped it boom in the Industrial Revolution. The fast-flowing waters of the Crake, which drains nearby Coniston Water and Beacon tarn, powered the lathes of the bobbin mills that had a ready market in Lancashire. Spark Bridge itself was part of Lancashire until reorganization in the 1970s.
