Southwark is London's most historic borough, comprising five districts. The borough's most popular attractions are located in the district of Bankside and Borough, bordering the south bank of the Thames between Blackfriars Bridge and London Bridge. This area was itself known as Southwark until the 1550s. The landmark Tate Modern building, linking to St Paul's Cathedral via the Millennium footbridge, was converted from an old power station to showcase the world's finest contemporary art. Its neighbour, the Bankside Gallery, exhibits watercolours and original prints.
