Southsea Castle, which the Mary Rose famously sank in front of, was built using stone from the remains of Beaulieu Abbey by Henry VIII, which has to make you wonder really, and could explain why so many people are negative about Southsea despite it actually being quite a nice place, with plenty of things to do if one is prepared to give it a chance. This small Portsea Island town has the best range of accommodation, both for tourism and residential, out of all of the Hampshire coastal towns, with many different interesting architectural styles to choose from.
